As a draughtsman, painter and sculptor, my styles range from the abstract to realism, from an eclectic combination of influences. I draw in a realistic form that sometimes approaches impressionistic, while my paintings extend from abstract, to surreal and psychedelic, to realism that spans styles from Renaissance directness, to the looseness and spontaneity of the Impressionists and other modern influences. My sculptural directions also vary from the realism of western art, to primitive influences from Asia, Africa, Polynesia, and native American themes. I`ve worked in clay, stone and metal, and currently am doing everything from small carvings to large sculptures in various types of wood. I enjoy whittling small pieces, expanding up to large carvings and totem poles.
I draw and paint in various genres; portraiture, equestrian, landscape or any type of request prospective. I work in any way that may be convenient to the patrons needs, in other words, I work from life directly, as in the model posing for me, or a landscape scene painted on the spot, or I can reproduce anything from a photo, which may be more suitable for someone who isn`t able or have the time to sit, or in the case of equestrian art, you can`t really get a horse to sit still! Most of the equestrian portraits and scenes are reproduced from photos, but I can work directly from the subject. There are saddlebreds and walkers, as well as race horse scenes, and bluegrass farmscapes. The majority of the landscapes I have painted are done on location, near my home in eastern Kentucky. I have a range of prices for portraits, the size, number of subjects, and the degree of complexity are all determiners of cost.
As a painter, and with many of my pursuits, I am a purist. When I paint I don’t believe in using graphite or charcoal to put down a preliminary image before painting. I do my preliminary ’drawing’ with a light wash of paint, so that my paintings are purely ‘paintings’ in the sense that the work is done totally with paint.
My abstract paintings are spontaneous, they emerge from rhythm, music, form, pattern, and I like to play colors against each other. My surreal and psychedelic works use this similar play of color combinations, and themes from dream scenes, hallucinations and nightmares, to visions ethereal and sublime.
My wood sculpture extends from small pieces I whittled,such as animals and human figures, to mid sized pieces that are one to three or four feet in height and width, to my larger carvings and totem poles that are eight to fifteen feet tall. I hope to do poles in the twenty to forty foot range, but I will need special arrangements as in a place that I can do such work, and the capability to move such pieces. My mind knows no limits, but physical limitations can be constraining, though I tend to persevere, this makes large sculpture a more intractable activity. I draw and paint much faster than I carve, thus my sculptures are priced accordingly.
